Habbo is one of those apps that try to combine online dating with social networking. To be clear, Habbo did not advertise itself as a dating platform. It is a social networking service that provides its users with a virtual environment to mingle in. It was initially for teenagers who want to make friends online. Nowadays, Habbo gains much popularity and has seen a large spike in the number of users. Thanks to its virtual environment and countless features, Habbo gives its users a very unique dating experience. How well does it compare to other dating sites? Should you use it? Find out more in this Habbo review.
When was Habbo Founded?
Habbo was launched back in 2000, meaning that it has been around for about 20 years. That means they have enough time to fix all bugs, update, and incorporate many new features that make it stand out.
Who Owns Habbo?
Habbo is owned by Sulake, a developer with many years of experience.
Registration & Profile
Let’s start at the top. How can you register on Habbo? There are two options, and both are relatively short processes.
The first option is registering with an email. Also, you should provide your birth date and password.
The second option is linking your Facebook or Twitter account to Habbo, which will allow the latter to import some information, such as your username and birth date, creating a new profile.
After this brief registration process, you will access Habbo’s magical world and understand why it is so famous. Habbo gives its users a virtual world for interaction, and it all starts with character creation.
There are many customization options, including skin color, hairstyles, eyes color, clothing, the name of it. Of course, your options are a bit limited at first, but you can always purchase additional items later on.
Regarding usernames, they are normally generated for users based on their email or their username if they link it to their social media account. But if you do not like it, you can change it later if the username you want isn’t already taken. However, you may need to verify your account to do this. It is a very simple email verification process. Habbo will send an email, and you just have to click the link. Can’t find it? Check the spam folder.
We recommend you verify your account as soon as possible. You will get the ability to create multiple characters on Habbo, so you can equip all the outfits that you like at once.
The biggest part of Habbo is its communication features, and there are many.
When you are ushered into Habbo’s virtual world, there will be many other players in the same room. You can take your time exploring this world and getting acquainted with its layout. Anyone can talk about anything in every room. You can chat with other players in the room by writing your message into the chat box and hitting Enter. A message will pop-up, and everyone in the room can read it. It is a public chat.
When you click on another player, there are many interaction options. You can:
Add as friend
Give hand item
Most of these features are easy to use. For instance, the trade option allows exchanging items with other players on Habbo. Giving respect to other players is just a simple way to show your interest in them. Ignoring a player would mean that you will not receive or see their messages. Give hand items means that you will hand over whatever item you currently have in your hand. Whisper works like private messages because only you and the recipient can see your message.
Habbo also features its messenger system, which is the most private form of communication. Here, you can directly message other users even outside the room. A neat little feature here is that you can see whether your message has been sent, received, and read. While you can chat with many people at once through Habbo Messenger, you cannot create a group chat.
How to Search for People on Habbo?
Unfortunately, there is no way to search for other users on Habbo. It is not surprising considering that Habbo is intended to be a virtual social world. The plus side is that the dating environment on this platform focuses on the character rather than on physical appearance.
How to Delete Habbo Account?
Deleting your account is a bit tricky, but it is simply because of how Habbo operates all legal requirements it has to comply with. To delete your account, access your character settings, then the privacy tab, then the GDPR menu, tick on the “Right to Erasure.” Users must answer a bunch of security questions to prove their identity. After that, users will be notified that their account will be deleted, which can take some time.
If Habbo has been around for 20 years, then it must have a very large userbase, right? That would be correct. Back in 2012 alone, there were over 280 million registered users on Habbo. Today, we can be certain that there are at least 300 million users, most of which are active daily. In the United States alone, there are about a million active users. Moreover, 50,000 new members are coming into Habbo every month.
Concerning gender proportion, the number is skewed toward the male population. 62% of the members are male as opposed to 38% female, but that should not affect your experience. Age-wise, there are more users between the age of 18 to 35. You won’t find many people above that. Keep in mind that Habbo was initially advertised to the teenage population, meaning that you can also find users below the age of 18.
Sexuality-wise, we do not have a figure on that. However, considering that anyone can join Habbo, it is safe to assume that everyone is welcome regardless of their sexuality.
Race and Ethnicity
With over 300 million registered users and worldwide coverage, we can say with certainty that Habbo has a member in every corner of the globe. You should find one locally regardless of your location.
What about religion? Habbo welcomes everyone regardless of their religious affiliations.
So how much does using Habbo cost? With all features they provide, their asking price is very low. Let’s compare what you will get as a free member and what you can get from their premium membership plans.
Every registered user is granted standard membership, and the following features are accessible:
Trial to Builder’s Club
As you can see, Habbo makes it so that their premium plans are completely optional. You do not have to spend a single penny to get the most out of Habbo. We consider this their major advantage.
Many dating sites we have seen in the past bar these features behind a paywall. Their “free trial” is nothing more than letting their users roam the site and get a feel for its layout. To use their services and get the most out of it, users must pay up. Habbo does not do that, however. Most of the features you will ever need are completely accessible.
That being said, we still recommend you upgrade to a premium membership on Habbo. They call it Club Membership, and there are two Clubs to choose from, each with exclusive features.
First, let’s talk about the Habbo Club Membership. It is for those who want to have more chat-oriented features. They have three different durations to choose from. Their 1-month plan costs $4. Their 6-month plan goes for $3.50 a month. Finally, their 1-year plan costs $3.33 a month. At this price point, you get the following features:
Special clothes, hair, and color
Higher daily rewards
Save your outfits
Higher friends’ capacity
Ability to create your group
Special room layouts
More dances, actions, and chat bubbles
Another plan is the Builders Club membership. It is for those who love interior design and want more control over their rooms. This plan gives players lots of furniture and decoration so they can craft their room to their heart’s content. They also have three different durations to choose from. Their 2-week plan costs $2.5 a week. The 1-month plan goes for $10, and their 3-month plan costs $9.33 per month. As a member of the Builder Club, you have access to the following:
Furniture limit increase (one-time increase, never goes down)
Floor plan editor
Control over rooms
As mentioned before, the features in each club are exclusive for that particular club. So if you are a Habbo Club user, you do not get the extra furniture limit that the Builder Club members enjoy. Even so, that does not mean you must decide which one you want. If you want the best of both worlds, Habbo provides a special bundle. At the cost of $14 a month for their 3-month plan, you get to enjoy all features from both clubs. We consider this to be the best value if you want to have it all.
Also, Habbo has an in-game currency that you can use to purchase various items and furniture. There are four bundles to choose from, but we find the best value to be their $55 pack. It gives you 630 credits and diamonds to spend.
Payment methods include PayPal, Credit Card, Direct Debit, and Paysafecard. Subscriptions are automatically renewed.
A neat feature Habbo put in place here is their spending limiter. It is intended for parents to control their children’s spending, which can get out of hand very quickly. You can also use this feature as a reminder not to spend too much in the virtual world.
How to Cancel Habbo Paid Subscription?
There are two ways to cancel your subscription. You can do it yourself by going into your Credits Subscription tab and clicking on “Cancel.” It is the faster way to do it. However, if you do not want to mess around in the settings, you can contact customer support and take care of it for you. Keep in mind that you will not get any refund, but you can still enjoy your membership until the next billing cycle. So, canceling subscription can take time, so we recommend you do it at least a week before the next billing cycle.
Is Habbo Safe?
Habbo is a virtual world for everyone above the age of 13. That fact alone prompts Habbo to implement many measures primarily to protect the minors, which also happen to benefit the adult users as well.
For one, Habbo provides an encrypted connection to ensure that hackers cannot steal the user’s information. It is a very basic yet important protection that all websites should have. Since there are in-game purchases, Habbo implements this feature to protect your wallet.
Privacy-wise, there is nothing to worry about as well. Habbo does not share information with a third party without your consent. As a user, you will not get much information just by checking out their profiles as well.
When it comes to scammer protection, the community works in unison to combat this as there is virtually no way to stop scammers other than putting the chat system behind the paywall. But since Habbo does not do that, they still educate users on how to protect themselves online.
Other than that, Habbo wants to keep its online environment as clean as possible. They monitor all chats to ensure that users are behaving appropriately. There is a system in place to censor inappropriate words and a reporting system as well.
Quality of Profiles
What about profile quality? You will not find out much from other members unless they choose to share this information with you. It is not a design flaw. Habbo decided to do this for security and privacy purposes. The most you can see is their username, badges, very short bio, and their achievement score. Suffice to say, having more badges means that you show serious commitment to Habbo. They might not get you dates, but they give you bragging rights.
Website Design and Usability
Next, let’s talk about design and usability. Since Habbo is a sort of online game, its designs reflect that very well. They make use of light and dark blue as well as many other colors to give their website a cartoonish look. The arts are pixelated, although the fonts and icons are large and contrast the background nicely so you can see them easily. The website is also very optimized, meaning no bugs and fast load time. The virtual world is so vast that there is no way to fully grasp what they offer unless you join and play by yourself.
How does Habbo Work?
Habbo works similarly to social dating websites in the sense that all people you see are randomized. Users have very little control over who they get to meet and talk to. In a way, Habbo works just like real-life traditional dating works.
While Habbo works similarly to a video game in many aspects that require you to sit in front of your computer, they have a mobile app. It is completely free and is compatible with both Android and iOS, which we appreciate. While not as many people use the Habbo app, we find that the graphics look a bit better on the mobile version thanks to the smaller screen.
Habbo app also runs on horizontal mode, which is a nice touch because it gives you a wider field of view. You need to tilt your phone to use it. Other than that, the colors are just as beautiful as their desktop counterpart.
Finally, other than the smaller screen, both the mobile app and desktop site share the same features.
Alternatives of Habbo
What if you do not like what Habbo has to offer, but still want something on the same level? We have a few other platforms for you, all of which are completely free to use and rely on the same random matchmaking. They are:
FaceFlow: Completely free to use
Chatib: Large userbase, many chat features
FriendFinderX: For casual hookups
Willow: For those who are into serious relationships
Chatrandom: For casual chats and dates
In short, do we recommend Habbo? That depends on what you are looking for. If you love playing computer games and chatting with others, then absolutely. Habbo creates a unique dating experience thanks to its virtual world.
While Habbo lacks a search feature that controls what kind of people you get to meet, that is not any different than finding dates in the real world. It does encourage users to look past the physical appearance and appreciate the character.
The security and customer support are also the best we have seen so far, which partially comes from the fact that there are also minors on the site. They even went the extra mile to include a handy safety tip so that parents and other users know how to protect themselves.
Plus, Habbo’s essential features are free, so you can still have fun and interact with others as a free user. With this in mind, we do not see any reason why you shouldn’t give it a go.
