FarmersOnly is a dating site that’s all about good old-fashioned country-style courting. This site provides a platform to connect folks who work and live on the soil as well as those who aim to put the city far behind them. Contrary to public opinion, this site does not only cater to farming folk but also to people who embrace the country living lifestyle.
With most dating sites focused on urban centers and big cities, FarmersOnly aims to offer a small-town ethos that is centred around old school values. It is often difficult for those in the outlying rural areas to find a partner without having to travel out of their country homes and fight for love in the City. But don’t expect dick pics here, folks, this site is uber-conservative with options such as Christian Dating, Rural dating and good ol’ Country Values.
FarmersOnly, the brainchild of Jerry Miller, is a niche dating site that boasts an impressive 8 million members, and this number is rising all the time. Eighty percent of these members are solidly based in the agricultural industry, Miller claims. Although FarmersOnly member base is only a fraction of the enormous numbers that make up larger city-based sites like OkCupid and eHarmony, the small-town feel of this site suits the founder down to a T.
Farmers and rural dwellers share a certain outlook and have a particular kind of lifestyle, which many of the city folk don’t seem to share. Although this site does not use any “new-fangled” algorithm-based matchmaking tools, people can find like-minded folk under the niche banner of FarmersOnly.
FarmersOnly hit the web in April 2005 and has been in business ever since. Well, that’s impressive.
FarmersOnly is the brainchild of Jerry Miller, a former advertising executive, and entrepreneur from Akron, Ohio. When faced with a friend’s struggle to find potential partners out in the sticks, he came up with an idea to create a website that could aid countryfolk to find love.
Before creating this company, Miller claims to have done extensive research and found that there was a definite division between rural and urban areas. He discovered that most of the farming community felt like city dwellers could not relate to them.
Signing up couldn’t be more simple, with just four steps: your gender match, your age, your email address, and your username. That’s it, and you are saddled up and ready to go, yee haa! An optional photo upload allows you to have access to the FarmersOnly site. You can fill in more information about yourself in the My Profile section, but you are required to fill in your compulsory bio and tagline.
You can then upload as many photographs of yourself as you wish, to the site directly or by emailing [email protected]. If you choose the email route, uploads can take up to 24 hours. You have the option of hiding your profile, and FarmersOnly will log you out, but don’t worry, your profile will be ready for you to use should you decide to log back in. FarmersOnly staff reviews user profiles for any profanity or inappropriate content or sharing any personal contact information.
Once you are signed up and out scouting for your forever country love, you can enjoy some FarmersOnly’s unique features. Their store sells customized items emblazoned with their site logo or their tagline, “City folks just don’t get it.” Available in mugs, caps posters, and other paraphernalia. Nice move for real fans.
FarmPhone provides a text messaging platform where users may chat with each other on their phones via a FarmersOnly number that hides users’ real phone numbers. Basically, people send their messages to the number that the site assigns them so, even though you are receiving messages on your phone, your number still remains private.
The “Discover” Feature allows users to view photos of active users in their target age group and simply liking or disliking their profile shots. When you move your mouse over the profile photo, you can click on the “I” icon and find out more about them. Or, you can simply choose whether you like or dislike the pic and move onto the next photo. Don’t worry, users will not be notified that you weren’t a fan, but FarmersOnly will let you know who likes you via email.
The “Who’s Online” feature allows you to peruse members online in a gallery style format. Each profile presents you with a profile pic, age, location, and a small “About” bio. The top of the page lets you know how many users are online and allows you to apply a filter based on gender, age, and distance from your location.
Messaging is only available for premium users, while free members are limited to sending “Flirts.” So, you will need to buy a premium membership to be able to communicate. Flirts are prewritten messages that can be sent to users that you like.
FarmersOnly does not offer any algorithm-based matching, and users must make do with profile information. Certain filters can be personalized so that matches are more specific, such as age range, distance, and whether they smoke or have children.
The easiest way to scope out potential suitors who are active is to visit the “Who’s Online” section. You are limited to age and distance filters here, but at least you are made aware of who else is in there, looking for someone as well.
If you want a more in-depth search, the “Member Search” feature allows you to look for particular users or browse Tinder-style with a “hot or not” your way to love.
To delete your FarmersOnly account, look on the left side navigation under “Account Settings.” Select “Remove Profile” which will delete your profile and your account completely. Once this has been done, you will have to restart the registration process from scratch (should you ever decide to come back), so you can hide your profile instead of completely removing it.
FarmersOnly boasts an impressive 8,000,000 membership with over 20, 000 users logged in at any given time. This site’s members increased exponentially since they launched their new FarmersOnly app. Over 80 percent of users hail from the good old USA, and the remaining percentage is mostly Canadian.
Most users are women at 61%, and the biggest age demographic is between 18 and 34 years of age. But, with a user base of 8+ million, there is a vast spread of age groups available for matching.
Although a seemingly conservative site, Miller makes it clear that both lesbian and male homosexuals are welcome on FarmersOnly. Not only are they welcome, but any harassment of community members who have alternative sexual preferences will result in the offender being banned from this site with no refund. This applies to ethnicity, religion, and politics as well.
All colors and nationalities are welcome on the FarmersOnly site. So, its racial community is as diverse as the US and Canada’s rural population. Which is probably not that diverse when you think of it.
Jerry Miller maintains that the site, though conservative value-based, does not extend to religious bigotry. Although the vast majority of FarmersOnly users are Christian, other faiths are not precluded from joining this community.
FarmersOnly is on the middle field spectrum in terms of membership price, featuring two membership plans. The standard membership is free and entitles a user to use search options, browse profile database, and send “Flirts.” With a premium membership, you can send and receive mail from other premium users and spy out who has been checking your profile.
Payments can be made by credit card, PayPal, cheque or via your mobile phone.
Premium membership allows you to:
There are two other features available to premium members at an additional cost. Gold membership costs an extra 9.99 USD a month, and this will allow you to send messages to free users (they will not be able to reply, however.) Your messages will have bling and be highlighted in gold and stand out from average Joe’s.
FarmPhone will set you back an extra 4.95 USD a month, and you will be able to text other members on their own personal mobiles while your number remains hidden. Even if they are not using this feature, your text will be forwarded to their email and their reply will be delivered back to you in text.
You can cancel your premium membership at any time by going to account settings, “Manage my Subscriptions,” where you will be given instructions depending on when the membership was purchased. You may leave your profile open until your current subscription expires, or you can delete it immediately.
FarmersOnly follows all the standard legal requirements to ensure privacy. This site employs the latest software technologies such as firewalls, routers, and encryption software.
Profiles are not too fleshed out on FarmersOnly. You have your basic bio and your basic filters, but these are no EliteSingles’ psychological tests by any stretch of the imagination. That said, somehow, this barebone and no fancy gizmos approach is keeping with the site’s ethos. You get to know someone (when you get to know them) the “modern” old-fashioned way.
Although FarmersOnly does not make use of algorithm-based matches, they do provide some filters in their profile matches. Users have the option of revealing their intent on this site, with even a “marital status desired.” You may choose from smoking and drinking, body type, and ethnicity, children, religion, and education.
That being said, FarmersOnly does no real email verification, which means that it is pretty easy to post a fake profile. Today, when so many modern dating sites are protecting their users from this hazard, it seems it is a tad negligent, rather than old fashioned, to not keep up to date in this area.
Overall, the website is straightforward and easy to navigate. It lacks the fancy design and features, but being a niche site, it is not really on a mission to keep up with the Joneses. A simple and non-flashy user interface is in keeping with Jerry Miller’s focus on providing an inclusive and straightforward dating app that even the most tech unsavvy user could easily negotiate.
Keeping its simple ethos can only carry so far, but to use this site effectively, FarmersOnly should provide more up to date features without losing their home-grown farmer cred.
FarmersOnly is a dating site that aims to promote small-town rural values and connect those who enjoy a different lifestyle and outlook to their city-dwelling counterparts. Because, as FarmersOnly creator reminds us, “city folk just don’t get it.”
FarmersOnly does provide an Android app through Google Play as well as an Apple version from the AppStore. The AppStore version has an impressive 4.4 out of 5-star rating from over 4600 reviews. The Google play review is a crappy 2.9, and user reviews state an overall dissatisfaction with the outdated and clunky operating systems.
The alternative to FarmersOnly and filling a similar niche is Farmers Dating, which was hailed in 2017 as the new “Tinder for farmers.” They are not far behind at all with 6+ million users and also define its ethos by old school and small-town values. There is also Farmers Dating if country style is your thing.
It is refreshing to see that niche dating sites such as FarmersOnly can find a measure of success in the city-obsessed world of the web. So many of the big-name dating apps treat minorities such as rural users as too small a demographic to make any real difference in their colossal user base. Miller really did his homework when he created FarmersOnly, in no small amount due to his close friend, who had no joy in finding a match in the city.
The problem comes in when small town, old fashioned values translate into a laisse faire attitude towards technology and advances in online dating. Tech may not only provide better matches but also increased security for their members. This lackadaisical approach to profile verification has created a hotbed of users with fake profiles whose designs are anything but old-fashioned and honest.
It is a real David vs. Goliath scenario when someone pays attention to neglected members of the urban dominated demographic and makes a success story of it. The success of this site has also shown that quite a few city folks are drawn towards country style values and traditions. With overpopulation, ecological and environmental disasters inundating the media daily, many urban dwellers are seeking a connection with the earth and self-sustaining, traditional processes.
The question remains: Do you really need all that psychology-based algorithm-streaming tools to find your potential partner? Most of the time, users do not answer the truckload of questions truthfully anyway and put themselves forward as being better people than they are. Not to mention blind spots and the amazing capacity of a mind to hide from itself.
The brunt of celeb jokes and a hilarious ad campaign that pokes fun at themselves, this site is making Miller laugh all the way to the bank. There is a market for people who don’t care to travel for a mate and there is a growing number of people dissatisfied with the hamster wheel of accrual and acquisition of modern city life.
There is no magic algorithm, though, to wave some statistical wand and produce a love match. The world is full of people with similar values and outlooks that never make it past first base while total opposites remain together till death do them part! Similar backgrounds and core values and a similar lifestyle do go a long way to making a deeper relationship possible, though. And in this new-fangled modern world, relationships need all the headstarts they can get. Do you get it? No? Then you must be City folk.
